Organic seeds: a healthy start
Organic seeds are resilient seeds. They provide a healthy foundation for organic cultivation. De Bolster produces seeds for over 330 organic varieties, ranging from vegetables and herbs to flowers and green manures. Among the larger seed companies in the Netherlands, De Bolster is the only player working 100% organically—covering both breeding and seed production.
We do this at various locations worldwide, managed entirely in-house. This allows us to guarantee our customers high-quality seeds that are organically certified and naturally bred.
Production locations with specific conditions
In Epe, we manage over 13 hectares of agricultural land where we produce and breed seeds from a wide range of varieties. In Moldova, we manage 120 hectares. By working at two locations, we spread risks and leverage the specific conditions of each site. Moldova is characterized by its rich soil and warmer season, while Epe allows us to keep key and new productions close to home.
Proven production method
Many varieties originate from our own organic breeding program, including our specialties such as pumpkin, tomato, and bell pepper. Additionally, we offer other proven varieties in close collaboration with fellow breeders in the industry.
We produce our seeds organically, ensuring they function optimally in organic environments later on.
How we produce strong seeds
On organic soil
Our production fields in Epe have been certified organic since 2002, and those in Moldova since 2014. Therefore, there is no longer any over-fertilization, and toxins used in the past on these lands no longer have an impact.
Prevention instead of control
In organic cultivation, we prevent diseases and pests through the right choice of varieties, balanced plant nutrition, biodiversity, and crop rotation. We do not use pesticides and rely on mechanical weed control.
Wildflower strips
By planting wildflower strips and preserving hedgerows near our plots, we attract natural enemies of potential pests. This creates a healthy balance in biodiversity, which naturally keeps the crops healthy.
Natural manure and compost
We enrich the soil with natural manure and compost, just as manure and leaves enrich the ground in nature. In addition, we annually use plant-based fertilizer pellets made from malt sprouts, corn gluten, vinasse, and molasses.
No DNA tampering
Organic seeds are also free from genetic modification (GMO); the DNA of the plant has not been artificially altered. With organic seeds, you have pure nature in your hands – a great start for a healthy crop.

Organic cultivation produces strong seeds
Organic plants build resilience because they occasionally come into contact with diseases and pests. The plants pass this resilience on to the next generation. Therefore, the seeds you buy produce resilient plants.
Conventional seeds, on the other hand, are often grown under conditions where diseases and pests are excluded as much as possible through the use of pesticides. Traces of toxins are often found in these seeds. Seeds from conventional production result in plants that are less resilient. Organic seeds provide a healthy foundation for organic cultivation.
Organic Label: Government Supervision
Seeds can only be called ‘organic’ if they have been produced according to the ‘European Regulation for Organic Production’. De Bolster’s seeds are 100% organic, recognizable on the packaging by the EU organic logo, also known as ‘the green leaf’. In the Netherlands, this European certification is supervised by Skal Biocontrole. Skal operates under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) and ensures that organic production in the Netherlands complies with organic laws and regulations.
